Fake Smiles
During one of my photography grad school critiques, a professor told me that in fine art photos, people should not be smiling. Having come from a background of documentary photography, where the goal was often to capture something authentic, if surprising, the so-called rules and acceptable tropes of fine art photography bugged me. This series is a comment on the serious (mopey?) faces often pictured in “fine art” photographs, as well as the public masks we put forth on social media.
